This is a great topic/poll on Edutopia. I see bullying all the time at the middle school level. Kids are really cruel at this age. This is one reason I like to teach this age level...hopefully I can make a difference and all kids can see how important and special they are. But, is bullying happening more now that kids can be masked behind the computer?
I just read and blogged about this on Edutopia's article as well. I am glad that some schools are incorporating Bullying Prevention Awareness Month for October. My son's preschool class is talking about this issue this weak and are asked to wear pink. I am glad the schools are making time to talk about this serious subject and making all students more aware of the signs and prevention of bullying. Unfortunately, I do feel that people can hide behind technology and the different uses with it to carry out bullying agendas.
ReplyDeleteIt is really so scary the things going on to students. Even as a teacher in the class, things are said and things are happening in my room that I am not even aware of. I teach all girls so the emotions are high in my room so I can visibly tell when a student has been crying or is upset. However, I can be teaching a lesson then after the lesson is over a student comes up to me and shows me a note she received from another student while the lesson was going on!!
ReplyDeleteI make it a point to tell my students that my room and the building has a zero tolerance policy and that if something takes place, I may not know but it is their job to communicate to me in some way or another that they are uncomfortable or feel threatened by another.
